Sport Network was developed to place sport in the wider picture of international cooperation and development. In 2002, the United Nations launched a special working group called “Sport for Peace and Development.” From the beginning, Sport Network collaborated with the first UN Secretary General Special Advisor for Sports, Adolf Ogi.
This international movement formally began on November 1, 2002 at the First Sports for Development Conference held at Magglingen, Switzerland. We attended this event; we were Spain’s only elected organization to attend, and we signed the final declaration for the program.
In 2003, a similar international conference on sports for development, Next Step, was held at Amsterdam. It was followed by a Second Conference in Magglingen, in 2005. One of its resolutions was the creation of the International Platform of Sport for Development, in which Sport Network takes part.
